Who We Are

Homeward Bound Rescue League is a non-profit , no-kill animal rescue organization dedicated to finding happy healthy homes for our beloved rescued dogs and cats. We rescue, foster, and find permanent homes for our rescued friends. The fact that we are a no-kill organization and we take all breeds sets us apart from other rescue leagues and shelters. We started our rescue organization one year ago and are very proud to say that within that time we have placed over 400 dogs and cats into safe and happy homes. Homeward Bound Rescue League is an entirely volunteer organization that embodies the sense of community by advocating humane and ethical principles.

Adoption activities will take place at our adoption fair at the Pets Supplies Plus in Canton.

Adoptions are held *first and third* Saturdays of every month from noon to 4 pm.

Please bring a valid drivers license to complete application form.

Hello everyone my name is Rumor. I had been suffering from heart worm but am now cured. This is a very scary sickness and on top of the heart worm I was also pregnant with a litter of 13 puppies. Carrie and Carol Ann have worked tirelessly for me and my puppies. We are happy to report that all of my kids have found new forever ever homes. I think about my little rug rats often and picture how happy they are in their new homes. I really want to help Carrie and Carol Ann as much as possible, so I am here asking for your help on my behalf. Home Ward Bound Rescue League rescues dogs and cats from puppy mills, and neglectful and abusive situations we also rescue strays and owner surrenders. Some of our animals need extensive surgeries and are special need animals while others were able to escape there harmful situations without harm. We foster and medically care for many animals and have a passion for our cause and love for the ones that we rescue, and appreciation for those who are willing to join us or help us financially by donations. We will always honor every donation given to us and uphold ethical and financial obligation 100 percent to our animals and their care. If you have the means to help us by donating time, by fostering or lending a hand on our adoption days or if you would like to give a financial donation to one of our special needs animals or to the continuation of the rescue league we would be most gracious. Foster Homes Needed

We are always looking for people willing to foster dogs as well as cats. Whether it is only for a week or until the animal finds a permanent home is up to you. Please, if you have it in your heart to help to contribute to saving an animal, consider volunteering your heart and home. We always could use your help.

Meet Your Best Friend at the Zoo Sept. 28 & 29

ROYAL OAK, Mich., September 8, 2008 – The Detroit Zoo and the Michigan Humane Society, in collaboration with several local animal welfare organizations, will host “Meet Your Best Friend at the Zoo” September 28 and 29, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Presented by PETCO, the event is the nation’s largest off-site companion animal adoption program.

The adoption event will be held outdoors under tents in the Zoo’s front parking lot beneath the landmark water tower. There is no charge for admission to the event or for parking.

Each year, hundreds of adoptable dogs, puppies, cats and kittens find loving homes through this semiannual event. Adoption fees and policies are set by each participating group. A get-acquainted area will be available to provide guests an opportunity to spend time with an animal before adopting.

Because puppies are often in high demand, “puppy passes” will be given each morning to the first 25 adoption event guests who are looking specifically to adopt a puppy. Those with puppy passes will be allowed to enter the adoption tents at 9:45 a.m.

Last year, the fall “Meet Your Best Friend at the Zoo” event found homes for 670 animals. Since the program’s inception in 1993, over 12,000 companion animals have been placed into new homes at the spring and fall events.

“Meet Your Best Friend at the Zoo” is also supported by VCA Animal Hospitals, The Cat Practice, Camp Bow Wow, Motor City’s 104.3 WOMC and Mirror Newspapers.

HOW TO APPLY FOR YOUR NEW BUDDY

All questions must be answered COMPLETELY and you MUST be 21 years of age to be considered for one of our rescues:

Please provide your home address including the city
and what the closest crossroads are?

Could you please include a phone number that we may be able to contact you either during the day or evening and when it would be best to contact you.

Do you have children? if so, how many and their ages

Do you have a fenced in yard? if so, what type - privacy, cyclone, etc.

If you do not have a fence, how will you let the animal outside?

Do you own or rent your residence?

Is your residence a house, condo, mobile home, etc?

If you rent, are pets allowed at your location?

Have you ever owned a dog/cat or a puppy/kitten
before?

If so, what kind, do you still have them and if you don't, what happened to them?

If you have been a pet owner before, could you please
list your veterinarian(s) name and phone number(s)?

If you have been a pet owner before, was your pet
spayed or neutered, up to date on its shots and on
heart worm preventative?

If you are selected where will this animal be kept
during the day and where will it sleep at night?

While at work how long will the animal be left home
alone?

If housebreaking is needed, how will you do this?

Will you crate train?

If so, will you continue to use a crate?

Will you take this canine to an obedience class?

If you are married, have a significant other, have roommates, or have children, we will need to speak to the adults and meet all involved to make sure that everyone is in agreement and understands the commitment involved with adopting a pet.

New Puppy Essentials Article

It's fun and exciting to bring an adorable little puppy home. Here are some essential items to help you take great care of your furry new friend.

Premium-brand puppy food

Stock up on high-quality brand-name puppy food. It's the best way to give your growing puppy the nutrition he or she needs. Try to limit “people food.” It can cause vitamin and mineral imbalances as well as bone and teeth problems. It can also turn your pet into a picky eater and lead to obesity.

Food dish and water bowl

Or course, you'll need a nice, clean dish for all that yummy puppy food. You'll also want to leave out a bowl of fresh, clean water for your thirsty friend. Remember to clean the food dish and water bowl often.

Chew toys

Puppies love to chew on everything. Invest in a few good chew toys to help make sure your shoes don't become your puppy's favorite “chewwies.”

Brush

Brush your puppy frequently to help keep him or her clean and cut down on shedding. When you brush your puppy, you can also look for fleas and ticks, which you should do at least once a day during the warmer months.

Collar, leash, and ID tag

Don't forget a sturdy collar and leash so you can take your puppy for nice long walks. To help keep your puppy safe, attach an ID tag to his or her collar, and consider signing up for a lost pet recovery service. You'll get a free lost pet recovery service, good for the life of your pet, if you enroll in one of our pet health insurance plans.

Training crate or dog bed

Make sure your puppy has a warm and quiet place to rest, like a training crate. You may also want to get a dog bed or make one from a wooden box. Put a clean blanket or pillow in the bed and wash it often.

Veterinarian

You should choose a veterinarian as soon as possible. You'll need to visit your vet to get your puppy vaccinated. You should also have him or her neutered or spayed before six months of age (see Why Spay or Neuter to learn more). A pet health insurance plan can help you pay for vaccinations as well as spaying or neutering.

Check-ups, vaccinations, spaying or neutering all add up. Plus, you never know when your puppy might get hurt or sick. Luckily, you can help cover the costs of veterinary care with pet health insurance.
